Pseudo-Postmortem (V&V spoilers!)

Not quite a post-mortem, as the game hasn't been confirmed to be finished or fully abandoned, but we had a few thoughts we wanted to write about.

Working on this game was a fun experience! It was neat being able to see my game go from "I will make something for a game jam" all the way to "Here is a plotted-out game and I know what assets I need and I know all the characters" and then to "I released something!"

A few things stand out to me, though.

  • I liked the binary brush art style I used, however, it has a major limitation: it looks good exactly at 1920x1080 and at no other size. This is due to the small brush used and the lack of aliasing of any kind. It is crisp at native size and awkward at all other sizes.
  • I'm still not really a master of shading, so I avoided shading in my art for the game. Beaches and storms tend to mask shadows but most locations and backgrounds should have shading. The shot looking through the blinds, especially, needs shading (and objects and people and etc.) but lacks it. I do think this is a workable style but it requires some tweaking.
  • I was quite excited to make this game and had a lot of fun talking with our friends about it, but we ran into two major issues:
    • Life - some stuff happened so we were quite busy!
    • Another Game Idea - we came up with a second game idea and became way more enthralled with the idea of making this new idea than finishing our in-development idea.
  • I love Xela she is god's specialest little angel and she can do no wrong C:
  • I find it hilarious and kind of frustrating that I made a game with toxic yuri and lots of required CW's for a toxic yuri jam... only to submit the part of the game that has almost no toxic yuri...

Anyway, hope to release more updates for this game and finish it someday
